Monkey Bars

"I did it! I did it!!" My friend's six year-old came running inside, bursting with pride and excitement. "I made it all the way across!!" His joy was palpable. It was a big moment, he had made it all the way across the play set monkey bars. No doubt he had looked up at those five rungs for months. But today was the day he did it! And there was no going back.

I remember those playground days. And I'm still struck by the simple irony that you can't get across without letting go. That's what makes the monkey bars so risky; it's also what makes the thrill of crossing so vivid.

I think the monkey bars offer us a playful and profound invitation. What is it time to let go of? What is it that you used to need, but don't any more? What used to work, but doesn't now?

What is it you've stared at for months, or years, or decades? What if letting go releases you to swing and grasp the next rung, and the next, and the next?

Whatever it is for you, and when the time is right, I bless you to receive everything you need from the heart of God to let go and reach out for that next rung, and the next, and the next. I bless your spirit with abundant courage because God is with you (Joshua 1:9). I bless you with that moment of thrill, where you turn to Father and exclaim, "I did it!!" And I bless you to receive the joy, delight, and pride in His eyes for you. I bless you in the name of Father God, who loves you and celebrates with you, one rung at a time.
